We report the numerical and experimental study of probe pulse deformation in a forward-pumped distributed Raman amplifier on a 40-km standard single mode fiber. Distributed Raman amplification can improve the range of OTDR-based sensing systems, but it could result in pulse deformation. A smaller Raman gain coefficient can be used to mitigate pulse deformation.

We demonstrate the use of the electrooptic effect to control the propagation constant of the guided modes in silicate few mode fibers with internal electrodes. The electrooptic effect induces a perturbation of the fiber's refractive index profile that controls intermodal interference. To increase the electrooptic effect the silicate fibers are poled.

We present a robust fiber-based setup for Bessel-like beam extended depth-of-focus Fourier-domain optical coherence microscopy, where the Bessel-like beam is generated in a higher order mode fiber module. In this module a stable guided LP core mode is selectively excited by a long period grating written in the higher order mode fiber. Imaging performance of this system in terms of lateral resolution and depth of focus was analyzed using samples of suspended microbeads and compared to the case where illumination is provided by the fundamental LP mode of a single mode fiber.

Higher-order mode converters that work over a broad wavelength range are needed for various applications. A new, to the best of our knowledge, simple and cost-effective LP mode converter is fabricated by tapering a bundle of single-mode fibers. The device excites the LP mode in a four-mode step index fiber with a mode purity higher than 10 dB.

We present the first demonstration of shot-noise limited supercontinuum-based spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) with an axial resolution of 5.9 μm at a center wavelength of 1370 nm. Current supercontinuum-based SD-OCT systems cannot be operated in the shot-noise limited detection regime because of severe pulse-to-pulse relative intensity noise of the supercontinuum source.
