Introduction: Pain is one of the most frequently reported symptoms in hemodialyzed (HD) patients, with prevalence rates between 33% and 82%. Risk factors for chronic pain in HD patients are older age, long-lasting dialysis history, several concomitant diseases, malnutrition, and others. However, chronic pain assessment in HD patients is rarely performed by specialists in pain medicine, with relevant consequences in terms of diagnostic and treatment accuracy.

Article Synopsis
  • Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) is increasingly used for severe respiratory issues, but the study examines the impact of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria on outcomes in these patients.
  • The study involved 279 adults across five Italian hospitals and found 50% had MDR Gram-negative bacteria; 21% were detected before and 29% after V-V ECMO placement.
  • Results indicated a 42% one-year mortality rate, with those having pre-existing MDR bacteria at higher risk, emphasizing that higher hospital V-V ECMO volumes could reduce the rate of acquiring MDR bacteria.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the relationship between preoperative right ventricular free-wall longitudinal strain (RVFWLS) and changes in strain with the diagnosis of right ventricular dysfunction in patients undergoing mitral surgery.
  • It was conducted as a prospective observational study at a university hospital, analyzing various clinical and echocardiographic parameters before and after surgery to assess cardiac function.
  • The findings suggested that a preoperative RVFWLS value of -15% may predict the risk of postoperative biventricular dysfunction, although no significant correlations were found between strain measures and other clinical outcomes like ICU stay or renal function.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a multifaceted disease with a strong preference for the female sex. It is characterised by chronic widespread pain, sleep-wake disorders, fatigue, cognitive disturbances, and several other somatic symptoms. In this prospective observational study, we analysed data regarding 302 patients who were referred to our pain centre for a first clinical assessment evaluation and were then inspected for the physician-based 2016 revision of the ACR diagnostic criteria for FMS, regardless of the final diagnosis previously made by the pain therapist.
