Reduced docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrations seem to be associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and DHA accretion to the brain across the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) can be modulated by various factors. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify an efficient and non-invasive method to ensure brain DHA enrichment. In the present study, a safe and stable DHA-enriched nanoemulsion, designed to protect DHA against oxidation, was designed and administered intranasally in a transgenic mouse model of AD, the J20 mice.

Here, we focus on how seizure activity, whether as a primary symptom or a secondary comorbid event within a complex pathological setting, adversely impacts neurological trajectories. We discuss experimental and clinical evidence illustrating the participation of neurodegenerative and senescence-like adaptations.

Polyunsaturated alkylated lipophenols represent a new class of hybrid molecules that combine the health benefits of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids with the anti-carbonyl and oxidative stress (anti-COS) properties of (poly)phenols in a single pharmacological entity. To investigate the therapeutic potential of quercetin-3-docosahexaenoic acid-7-isopropyl lipophenol in neurodegenerative diseases, three synthetic pathways using chemical or chemo-enzymatic strategies were developed to access milligram or gram scale quantities of this alkyl lipophenol.

In mammals, most sex differences in phenotype are controlled by gonadal hormones, but recent work on transgenic mice has shown that sex chromosomes can have a direct influence on sex-specific behaviors. In this study, we take advantage of the naturally occurring sex reversal in a mouse species, Mus minutoides, to investigate for the first time the relationship between sex chromosomes, hormones, and behaviors in a wild species. In this model, a feminizing variant of the X chromosome, named X*, produces three types of females with different sex chromosome complements (XX, XX*, and X*Y), associated with alternative behavioral phenotypes, while all males are XY.

We report a first-in-class triple acting compound that targets serotonin type 6 and 3 receptors (5-HT-Rs) and monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) as an approach for treating AD. The key structural features required for MAO-B inhibition and 5-HTR antagonism and interaction with 5-HTR were determined using molecular dynamic simulations and cryo-electron microscopy, respectively.
