Segmented block copolymers with adhesive functionality bridges in between are synthesized through the combination of controlled radical polymerization (CRP) and thiol-quinone Michael-polyaddition. CRP provides a set of α,ω-dithiol polystyrenes (PS), which react as telechelics with a low molecular weight bisquinone, resulting in thiol-catechol connectivities (TCCs). By introducing as little as 3 mol % of TCC functionalities, the bonding of the polymer on dry and wet aluminum surfaces is significantly improved while keeping the integrity of the PS segments undisturbed to constitute favorable bulk properties.

Introduction: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that in 2019, intersection crashes accounted for $179 billion of economic damages and $639 billion in societal damages. Intersection advanced driver assist systems (I-ADASs) and automated driving systems (ADS) are designed and have been actively deployed to avoid or mitigate these intersection crash scenarios. Given the indeterminate parameter space for describing collision scenarios, evaluators, and designers are all challenged with condensing the possible intersection crash configurations into digestible, executable conditions for scenario-based simulation testing.

Research on the relationship between sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) and scores on neuropsychological tests (such as those measuring processing speed and reaction time) is inconclusive, and the association between SCT and motor incoordination and dysgraphia has not been objectively investigated. Mothers of 413 elementary school children (6-12 years of age) rated their children on the Pediatric Behavior Scale (PBS), which yields psychological problem scores, including SCT. Children were administered an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests assessing processing and performance speed, working memory, immediate and delayed recall, sustained attention, response inhibition, cognitive flexibility, fine motor manipulative skill, verbal fluency and retrieval, set shifting, and interference control, as well as intelligence and reading and math achievement.

Sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) is of renewed interest. The relationship between SCT, IQ and achievement scores, and academic impairment ratings was investigated in 218 students with autism and 676 with ADHD (6-16 years) and 549 elementary school students (IQ ≥ 80). Mothers rated their children on the Pediatric Behavior Scale.

A His-rich domain of preCollagen-D found in byssal threads is derivatized with Cys and Dopa flanks to allow for mussel-inspired polymerization. Artificial mussel glue proteins are accessed that combine cysteinyldopa for adhesion with sequences for pH or Zn2+ induced β-sheet formation. The artificial constructs show strong adsorption to Al2O3, the resulting coatings tolerate hypersaline conditions and cohesion is improved by activating the β-sheet formation, that enhances E-modulus up to 60%.
