Dielectronic satellite spectra of heliumlike argon, recorded with a high-resolution x-ray crystal spectrometer at the National Spherical Torus Experiment, were found to be inconsistent with existing predictions resulting in unacceptable values for the power balance and suggesting the unlikely existence of non-Maxwellian electron energy distributions. These problems were resolved with calculations from a new atomic code. It is now possible to perform reliable electron-temperature measurements and to eliminate the uncertainties associated with determinations of non-Maxwellian distributions.

Visual evoked potentials were recorded in different stages of the operation in 12 patients with tumors of the chiasmal-sellar region. A correlation was noted between the dynamics of the P100 latent period and the changes of visual functions after the operation. Intraoperative monitoring of visual evoked potentials makes it possible to appraise the functional condition of the optic nerves objectively and correct the techniques and tactics of the operative intervention.

Based on the equation of the propagation rate of pulse wave and on the presentation of the blood vessel as a hollow thin-wall cylinder a formula for estimation of the relative modulus of the vessel wall elasticity was obtained. The obtained formula makes it possible to improve the determination procedure of the mechanical properties and tonus of the blood vessels.

Visual evoked potentials were analysed in 15 patients before and after operations performed in the acute and cold periods of rupture of cerebral aneurysms. The analysis made it possible to identify the regions of the disturbed latency and shape of the potentials. The location of the aneurysm determines the site of the region of impairment of the visual evoked potentials, whose area correlates with the severity of the patients' condition in the acute period.
