Background: Ketamine administration during stable propofol anesthesia is known to be associated with an increase in bispectral index (BIS) but a "deepening" in the level of hypnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the effect-site concentration of ketamine (CeK) and 2 electroencephalogram (EEG)-derived parameters, the BIS and spectral edge frequency (SEF95), after the administration of a ketamine bolus. Secondary aims included investigating the BIS and SEF95 variations with time and changes in the surgical pleth index (SPI).

Article Synopsis
  • Individuals with bipolar disorders (BD) tend to have a shorter life expectancy, prompting the need for easily measurable markers of accelerated aging like BioAge, calculated from routine blood tests and physical exams.
  • In a study of 2,220 outpatients with BD, results showed that a small percentage had significant BioAge Acceleration, which is linked to factors such as young age, male sex, being overweight, and sleep issues.
  • Further research is needed to confirm these findings with different groups and explore whether improving factors like metabolic health and sleep could impact aging rates in individuals with BD.

Article Synopsis
  • Bipolar disorder is linked to premature cellular aging, evidenced by shortened telomere length (TL), particularly in a subgroup of young individuals.
  • A study analyzed 542 individuals with bipolar disorder, finding a cluster of young people (average age 29.64) with significantly shorter TL.
  • Gene expression analysis revealed decreased levels of the gene POT1 in this subgroup, indicating a potential new mechanism related to telomere shortening in bipolar disorder.

Background: Various pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) models have been developed to accurately dose propofol administration during total intravenous anesthesia with target-controlled infusion (TIVA-TCI). We aim to clinically compare the performance of the Schnider model and the new and general-purpose Eleveld PK/PD model during TIVA-TCI.

Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study at a single center, enrolling 78 female patients, including 37 adults (aged < 65 years) and 41 elderly patients (aged ≥ 65 years).

Modern livestock farm technologies allow operators to have access to a multitude of data thanks to the high number of mobile and fixed sensors available on both the livestock farming machinery and the animals. These data can be consulted via PC, tablet, and smartphone, which must be handheld by the operators, leading to an increase in the time needed for on-field activities. In this scenario, the use of augmented reality smart glasses could allow the visualization of data directly in the field, providing for a hands-free environment for the operator to work.
