Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health issue caused by misuse in humans, animals, and agriculture, prompting a study on veterinary students' understanding of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in South Africa.
A survey conducted among 147 final-year veterinary students at the University of Pretoria revealed that while most students were aware of AMS, a significant number lacked a comprehensive understanding of it, particularly relating to hygiene practices.
Many students felt their knowledge of AMS was inadequate and expressed a desire for more education on the topic, suggesting that the veterinary curriculum should be revised to include more information on AMR and AMS.
