By means of a designed epidemic model, we evaluated the influence of seasonal vaccination coverage as well as a potential universal vaccine with differing efficacy on the aftermath of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The results of the modeling enabled us to conclude that, to control a seasonal influenza epidemic with a reproduction coefficient ≤ 1.5, a 35% vaccination coverage with the current seasonal influenza vaccine formulation is sufficient, provided that other epidemiology measures are regularly implemented.

A universal model intended primarily for predicting dynamics of the mass epidemics (outbreaks) caused by special pathogens is being developed at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology Vector. The model includes the range of major countermeasures: preventive and emergency mass vaccination, vaccination of risk groups as well as search for and isolation/observation of infected cases, contacts, and suspects, and quarantine. The intensity of interventions depends on the availability of the relevant resources.

The mouse PancChip, a microarray developed for studying endocrine pancreatic development and diabetes, represents over 13,000 cDNAs. After computationally assigning the cDNAs on the array to known genes, manual curation of the remaining sequences identified 211 novel transcripts. In microarray experiments, we found that 196 of these transcripts were expressed in total pancreas and/or pancreatic islets.

The new version of protein family patterns bank Prof_Pat 1.16 was used to investigate 3924 amino acid sequences of open reading frames of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain H37Rv. The similarity to proteins with the known function was confirmed for 2772 amino acid sequences.
