The concept of patient engagement has been widely studied for decades in the fields of medicine, nursing, psychology, social science, public health, and policy, and increased levels of patient engagement have been shown to improve health outcomes and strengthen reported experiences of care. Despite this, little research has been done to evaluate what patient engagement looks like within the context of a genetic counseling session. Additionally, there is limited literature from researchers based in the United States that aims to better understand patient engagement in non-English-speaking populations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground And Objectives: Children with medical complexity (CMC) experience increased risk of adverse events during and after hospitalization, and these risks are even greater for CMC whose caregiver has a preferred language other than English. Because many adverse events for CMC may be attributable to communication challenges, understanding caregiver and physician perspectives may help prevent adverse events.
Methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with Spanish-speaking caregivers of hospitalized CMC and their inpatient attending physicians.
Chelex-based DNA extractions are well suited for student DNA barcoding research because they are simple, safe, and inexpensive and can be performed without specialized laboratory equipment, allowing them to be performed in classrooms or at home. Extracted DNA is stable in Chelex solution for at least a week at ambient temperature, allowing collection of DNA samples from remote students. These extractions provide quality DNA for many taxa and are optimal for barcoding invertebrates, especially in combination with novel cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) primer cocktails and PCR cycling conditions.
