As more health professions students, trainees, and clinicians engage in acts of professional resistance, professional accountability is needed when acts of resistance influence patient care. This article suggests standards that can help distinguish between professional and nonprofessional resistance and prioritize minimizing harm and injustice to patients.

Xylazine, an alpha-adrenergic agent, is a common adulterant in the non-prescribed opioid supply. It has multiplicative sedative effects when used with opioids and these effects can negatively impact pregnancy. Given that the opioid epidemic in Canada is not abating and continues to evolve, cases of xylazine exposure during pregnancy are beginning to present in obstetrical units and emergency departments.

is a growing health concern as the leading causal agent of systemic candidiasis, a life-threatening fungal infection with a mortality rate of ~40% despite best available therapy. Yck2, a fungal casein kinase 1 (CK1) family member, is the cellular target of inhibitors YK-I-02 (YK) and MN-I-157 (MN). Deaths of parents and grandparent caregivers threaten child well-being owing to losses of care, financial support, safety and family stability, but are relatively unrecognized as a public health crisis. Here we used cause-specific vital statistics death registrations in a modeling approach to estimate the full magnitude of orphanhood incidence and prevalence among US children aged 0-17 years between 2000 and 2021 by cause, child age, race and ethnicity, sex of deceased parent and state, and also accounted for grandparent caregiver loss using population survey data.
