Successful awake intubation using Airtraq in a low-resource setting for a patient with severe post-burn contractures.

Background: In resource-limited settings, advanced airway management tools like fiberoptic bronchoscopes are often unavailable, creating challenges for managing difficult airways. We present the case of a 25-year-old male with post-burn contractures of the face, neck, and thorax in Nigeria, who had been repeatedly denied surgery due to the high risk of airway management complications. This case highlights how an awake intubation was safely performed using an Airtraq laryngoscope, the only device available, as fiberoptic intubation was not an option.

Platelet storage in small bags as a model of platelet function in full-sized containers.

Background: Evaluation of additive solutions, storage containers, new collection and storage methods, and other potential modifications is resource intensive, resulting in diversion of platelets away from blood bank inventories and significant time to complete study recruitments. Our goal was to evaluate the feasibility of a small bag for the study of platelet storage, and, by using a standardized respirometry test, separate daily metabolic capacity from observations made in the dynamic storage environment of changing pH, fuels, and end products.

Methods: Single-donor apheresis platelets collected in 100% plasma had small volumes removed to meet secondary processing requirements.

Background: Pathogen reduction technology (PRT)-treated apheresis platelets (APs) were returned without platelet swirl and with pH < 6.2. The platelet donor was taking prescription levothyroxine and metformin plus over-the-counter medications and supplements.

Intraoperative Anesthesia-Related Critical Events in Low-Resource Hospitals During Short-Term Surgical Missions in Tanzania and Democratic Republic of the Congo: An Observational Study.

Background: Critical incidents and mortality related to anesthesia are more frequently observed in low- and middle-income countries in comparison to high-income countries. The difficulties linked to anesthesia in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Tanzania have limited documentation. The aim of this study was to comprehensively document anesthesia-related critical events that occurred during surgical missions organized by the nongovernmental organization 2nd Chance in hospitals in DRC and Tanzania.

The Edmonton Frail Scale as a screening score for frailty in oncogeriatrics.

Introduction: The comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is recommended for assessing frailty in older cancer patients but is time-consuming. The G8 screening tool was developed to select frail patients requiring CGA to optimize resources. The Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS) is another frailty scale validated for preoperative frailty screening, but scarcely studied in the field of oncogeriatrics.
