Telomeres are a protective cap that prevents chromosome ends from being recognized as double-stranded breaks. In somatic cells, telomeres shorten with each cell division due to the end replication problem, which eventually leads to senescence, a checkpoint proposed to prevent uncontrolled cell growth. Tumor cells avoid telomere shortening by activating one of two telomere maintenance mechanisms (TMMs): telomerase reactivation or alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT).

Introduction: Immunosuppressed patients are at an increased risk of complications from COVID-19. Despite the morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19, there is little information regarding its effect on post-renal transplant patients. This study investigated the impact of a COVID-19 diagnosis on renal transplant recipients in terms of graft failure and mortality.

Identifying Policy-relevant Indicators for Assessing Landscape Vegetation Patterns to Inform Planning and Management on Multiple-use Public Lands.

Understanding the structure and composition of landscapes can empower agencies to effectively manage public lands for multiple uses while sustaining land health. Many landscape metrics exist, but they are not often used in public land decision-making. Our objectives were to (1) develop and (2) apply a process for identifying a core set of indicators that public land managers can use to understand landscape-level resource patterns on and around public lands.

Mixed-methods feasibility study on the cultural adaptation of a child abuse prevention model.

The current study utilized mixed-methods analyses to examine the process of adapting a home-based parenting program for a local Latino community. The study examined the: (a) acceptability and cultural congruence of the adapted SafeCare® protocol, (b) adherence to the core components of SafeCare® while adapting to local community culture, and (c) social validity of the new model in addressing SafeCare® target areas (parenting, home safety, and child health). Participants were 28 Latino mothers and eight providers.

The potential of alcohol "heat-of-the-moment" scenarios in HIV prevention: A qualitative study exploring intervention implications.

Scenarios simulating real-world risk situations have proven effective for substance use intervention methods and could potentially prove useful as an HIV-prevention method. This study explored qualitatively the development and use of such "in-the-moment" methods. We interviewed 97 moderate-drinking women (50 % Caucasian) after participation in an experiment requiring that they project themselves into a risky-sex scenario.
