Background: Recent literature on traumatic brain injury (TBI), though mixed when reporting outcomes, seems collectively to suggest possible gender advantage for women in postinjury recovery, especially in executive functions. Hormonal neuroprotection, through female reproductive hormones, is often proposed as an underlying factor in these results. We explored potential gender differences in an aspect of executive functions, self-awareness (SA), which is often impaired after TBI, limits patient effort in critical rehabilitation, and increases caregiver burden.

Results: High rates of psychological distress have been reported after OHCA.
Measurements of normoxic, hypoxic (15% or 10% O₂) and post-hypoxic oxygen consumption (VO₂) were conducted in chicken embryos every other day between embryonic day 3 (E3) and day 19 (E19), out of a total embryogenic period of 20.5 days. The results indicated that, irrespective of age, hypoxia lowered VO₂ throughout embryogenesis without any contraction of an O₂ debt.

The racemate (4) was found to be active at the NMDA receptor in an in vitro assay, prompting the synthesis of the individual stereoisomers. The S isomer (4a) was found to be 12 times more potent than the R isomer (4b).
