Intravenous cefuroxime as a first-line treatment for women hospitalized for pyelonephritis.

Background: Empirical treatment of pyelonephritis in the emergency ward includes broad-spectrum antibiotics. Such a strategy favours broad-spectrum antibiotic overuse. Local antibiotic stewardship teams can propose local recommendations to adapt empirical antibiotic treatment devoted to spare precious molecules that remain active on MDR bacteria, such as fluoroquinolones or other broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Contribution of the land use allocation model for agroecosystems: The case of Torrecchia Vecchia.

In this study, we developed a bio-economic model coupling land use and ecosystem services to investigate the role of forests on a broad set of ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, soil quality and biodiversity. As a case study, the model was calibrated with economic, agronomic and ecological data from the Torrecchia Vecchia agroecosystem in Italy. In our analysis of optimal land use allocation, the results showed that diversified land use is required to provide a good balance between provisioning and non-provisioning ecosystem services.

Trade-offs between pasture production and farmland bird conservation: exploration of options using a dynamic farm model.

In European grassland landscapes, grazing and mowing play a key role for the maintenance of high-quality habitats that host important bird populations. As grasslands are also key resources for cattle feeding, there is a need to develop management strategies that achieve the double objective of production and biodiversity conservation. The objective of this study was to use a modelling approach to generate recognisable patterns of bird dynamics in farms composed of different land use proportions, and to compare their production and ecological dimensions.
