The paediatric liver transplant experience in Johannesburg, South Africa: A broad overview and update.

The Wits Transplant Unit performed its first paediatric liver transplant in 2005. Initial experiences from the unit were published in 2012 and 2014. Since then, significant progress has been made in capacity-building the unit, improving outcomes and enhancing service delivery.

Wits Transplant Unit Annual Report 2022: Adult and paediatric liver transplantation.

In 2022, the Wits Transplant Unit performed 57 liver transplants: 33/57 adult (58%) and 24/57 paediatric (42%) recipients. At the beginning of 2022, 28 candidates were on the adult waitlist. Forty-six candidates were added to the waitlist during the year.

Pediatric Index of Mortality 3-An Evaluation of Function Among ICUs In South Africa.

Objectives: To evaluate the performance of the Pediatric Index of Mortality 3 as mortality risk assessment model.

Design: This prospective study included all admissions 30 days to 18 years old for 12 months during 2016 and 2017. Data gathered included the following: age and gender, diagnosis and reason for PICU admission, data specific for the Pediatric Index of Mortality 3 calculation, PICU outcomes (death or survival), and length of PICU stay.

High-flow oxygen therapy v. standard care in infants with viral bronchiolitis.

Background: High-flow humidified oxygen (HFHO) therapy has demonstrated benefit in infants with bronchiolitis.

Objectives: To investigate the efficacy of HFHO in infants with moderate to severe viral bronchiolitis, when used outside the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), in a hospital with limited PICU resources.

Methods: A randomised controlled trial, which enrolled 28 infants between 1 month and 2 years of age, with a clinical diagnosis of acute viral bronchiolitis and moderate to severe respiratory distress.

Mortality following snake bite envenomation by Bitis arietans in an HIV positive child: A case report.

Snake bites occur commonly in the rural areas of South Africa. Hospitals where snake bites are uncommon should always have protocols on standby in the event of such cases presenting. This is the first reported case documenting the effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on snake bite in South African children.
