Controls on organic carbon preservation in marine sediments remain controversial but crucial for understanding past and future climate dynamics. Here we develop a conceptual-mathematical model to determine the key processes for the preservation of organic carbon. The model considers the major processes involved in the breakdown of organic carbon, including dissolved organic carbon hydrolysis, mixing, remineralization, mineral sorption and molecular transformation.

Cannabis derivatives are among the most widely used psychoactive substances in the world, which leads to growing medical concerns regarding its chronic use and abuse especially among adolescents. Exposure to THC during formative years produces long-term behavioral alterations that share similarities with symptoms of psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. In this study, we have analyzed the functional and molecular mechanisms that might underlie these alterations.

Group II-VI semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) with atomically defined thicknesses and extended atomically flat (001) facets are used for ligand binding and chiro-optical effects. In this study, we demonstrate that tartrate ligands, anchored by two carboxylate groups, chelate the (001) facets of NPLs at an average ratio of one tartrate molecule to two cadmium (Cd) surface atoms. This assembly of chiral molecules on inorganic nanocrystals generates a circular dichroism -factor as high as 1.

Background: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) induces a wide range of neurodevelopmental disabilities that are grouped under the term 'fetal alcohol spectrum disorders' (FASD). The effects of PAE on brain development are dependent on complex neurochemical events, including modification of AMPA receptors (AMPARs). We have recently found that chronic ethanol (EtOH) exposure decreases AMPA-mediated neurotransmission and expression through the overexpression of the specific microRNA (miR)137 and 501-3p, which target GluA1 AMPA subunit, in the developing hippocampus in vitro.

The identification of genes involved in replicative stress is key to understanding cancer evolution and to identify therapeutic targets. Here, we show that CDK12 prevents transcription-replication conflicts (TRCs) and the activation of cytotoxic replicative stress upon deregulation of the MYC oncogene. CDK12 was recruited at damaged genes by PARP-dependent DDR-signaling and elongation-competent RNAPII, to repress transcription.
