The processing literature provides some evidence that heritage Spanish speakers process gender like monolinguals, since gender-marking in definite articles facilitates their lexical access to nouns, albeit these effects may be reduced relative to speakers who learned the language as majority language. However, previous studies rely on slowed-down speech, which leaves open the question of how processing occurs under normal conditions. Using naturalistic speech, our study tests bilingual processing of gender in determiners, and in word-final gender vowels.

Due to the low prevalence of such conditions (less than 1 in 2000 people), medical expertise is limited, knowledge is poor and patients' care provided by medical centers is inadequate. However, this percentage may include truly de novo patients (carrying a reduced D4Z4 allele that is not present in either of the parents) and patients with apparently sporadic disease resulting from mosaicism, non-penetrance, or complex genetic situations in either patients or parents. In this study, we characterized the D4Z4 Reduced Alleles (DRA) and evaluated the frequency of truly de novo cases in FSHD1 in a cohort of DNA samples received consecutively for FSHD-diagnostic from 100 Italian families.

Compared with "light" syllable-initial realizations, "dark" syllable-final variants involve reduced tongue tip-alveolar ridge contact and a raised/retracted tongue dorsum. We investigate whether native French and Spanish speakers whose L1 lacks such positionally conditioned variation can acquire English-/l/ allophony, testing the hypotheses that (1) the allophonic pattern will be acquired by both groups but (2) learners will differ from native speakers in their phonetic implementation, particularly in codas; and (3) French-speaking learners will outperform their Spanish-speaking counterparts.
