Ischemic stroke consists of rapid neural death as a consequence of brain vessel obstruction, followed by damage to the neighboring tissue known as ischemic penumbra. The cerebral tissue in the core of the lesions becomes irreversibly damaged, however, the ischemic penumbra is potentially recoverable during the initial phases after the stroke. Therefore, there is real need for emerging therapeutic strategies to reduce ischemic damage and its spread to the penumbral region.

Identification of host endotypes using peripheral blood transcriptomics in a prospective cohort of patients with endocarditis.

Objectives: Host responses to infection are a major determinant of outcome. However, the existence of different response profiles in patients with endocarditis has not been addressed. Our objective was to apply transcriptomics to identify endotypes in patients with infective endocarditis.

Cannabidiol and addiction.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been investigated for several therapeutic applications, having reached the clinics for the treatment of certain types of epilepsies. This chapter reviews the potential of CBD for the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD). We will present a brief introduction on SUD and current treatments.

A retrospective study of deep learning generalization across two centers and multiple models of X-ray devices using COVID-19 chest-X rays.

Generalization of deep learning (DL) algorithms is critical for the secure implementation of computer-aided diagnosis systems in clinical practice. However, broad generalization remains to be a challenge in machine learning. This research aims to identify and study potential factors that can affect the internal validation and generalization of DL networks, namely the institution where the images come from, the image processing applied by the X-ray device, and the type of response function of the X-ray device.
