Burnout Reduction Strategies Using Mobile-Based Applications: The Creation and Development of the SANE Well App.

Introduction: Sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) provide specialized medical forensic care to survivors of sexual assault, often working in stressful conditions, with routine exposure to the traumatic experiences of their patients. SANEs experience high levels of both vicarious trauma and burnout.

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to describe the development of a SANE support application, accessible to all SANEs, that utilizes self-care and positive coping strategies to enhance SANE resilience and thereby reduce burnout.

Cleft lip and palate surgery simulator: Open source simulation model.

Objective: Cleft lip and palate is the most common craniofacial birth anomaly and requires surgery in the first year of life. However, craniofacial surgery training opportunities are limited. The aim of this study was to present and evaluate an open-source cleft lip and palate hybrid (casting and three-dimensional (3D) printing) simulation model which can be replicated at low cost to facilitate the teaching and training of cleft surgery anatomy and techniques.

Molecular species determination of cyathostomins from horses in Ireland.

Cyathostomins are globally important equine parasites, responsible for both chronic and acute pathogenic effects. The occurrence of mixed infections with numerous cyathostomin species hinders our understanding of parasite epidemiology, host-parasite dynamics, and species pathogenicity. There have been few studies of cyathostomin species occurring in horses in Ireland, where temperate climatic conditions with year-round rainfall provide suitable conditions for infection of grazing animals with bursate nematodes.

The Effects of a Multi-Family Group Trauma Intervention on Caregiver Posttraumatic Stress Symptom Clusters.

Strengthening Family Coping Resources (SFCR), a multi-family group intervention tailored to families experiencing traumatic stress, is associated with improved post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and family functioning. To further SFCR research, we examined (1) SFCR's effects on caregiver PTSD symptom clusters (intrusions, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood [NACM], alterations in arousal and reactivity); and (2) whether effects differed by caregiver trauma type (interpersonal versus non-interpersonal; intrafamilial versus extrafamilial). Forty-two caregivers of primarily low socioeconomic status reporting trauma histories completed SFCR treatment.

Promoting Professional Quality of Life and Resiliency in Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.

Background: Sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) have received specialized education and clinical training in providing forensic care for sexual assault and abuse victims. SANEs provide compassionate and competent care that promotes emotional recovery for their patients; however, caring for this population puts SANEs at risk for secondary traumatic stress, professional burnout, and compassion fatigue. The research regarding SANEs indicates that there may be multiple personal and organizational factors that affect their development of negative outcomes related to professional quality of life.
