Effects of a daylight intervention in the morning on circadian rhythms and sleep in geriatric patients: a randomized crossover trial.

Purpose: During hospitalization, circadian rhythms and sleep are often disrupted, which has negative effects on health outcomes. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether a daylight intervention in the morning could improve the circadian rhythms of cortisol and melatonin and enhance objective and subjective sleep quality in geriatric patients.

Methods: The present study is a randomized, two-period crossover trial conducted in a geriatric ward in 15 non-demented geriatric trauma patients with a mean age of 83.

Differential Fatty Acid Response of Resident Macrophages in Human Skeletal Muscle Fiber and Intermuscular Adipose Tissue.

Human skeletal muscle contains different types of tissues with skeletal muscle fibers (SMFs) and intermuscular adipose tissues (IMATs) as the main components. We maintained human skeletal muscle tissues from 12 study participants under native conditions in vitro for 11 days to investigate the dynamics of macrophages that reside in adjacent IMATs and SMFs simultaneously. The samples were subjected to immunohistochemical analysis for macrophage phenotyping and mitochondrial mass assessment before and after maintenance in vitro.

(Interfering) Cortical mechanisms of standing balance and cognition in old-age depression: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study.

Major depressive disorder in old age can cause changes in the cerebral cortex that might lead to postural imbalance and thus increase fall risk. We aim to examine cortical activation during standing balance in depressed older patients compared to healthy controls and to determine how an additional cognitive task affects this activation. Eleven older patients (age ≥65 years) diagnosed with major depressive disorder and sixteen age-matched healthy controls participated in the study.

Pharmacist-Led Medication Management in Acute Geriatric Medicine and Its Associations with Rehospitalizations: A Cohort Study.

Introduction: Hospitalization and discharge in older patients are critical and clinical pharmacists have shown to ameliorate risks. Our objective was to assess their benefit as part of the geriatric team regarding rehospitalizations and related outcomes after discharge focusing on general practitioners' decision to continue or change discharge medication (GPD).

Methods: Prospective implementation study with 6-month follow-up in an acute geriatric clinic.

In view of the demographic change, the need for intersectoral care of the aging population has already been identified. The strategies for implementation are diverse and address different approaches, each of which requires different sectors to overlap. This article provides an overview of already completed and ongoing projects for the care of geriatric patients.
