Methods: Eligible consenting couples planning their first treatment cycle in five Canadian fertility clinics received either IVF, within 90 days of randomization, or a period of 90 days with no treatment. Random allocation was stratified by female age and sperm quality, and administered using numbered, opaque, sealed envelopes.

All cuffs moistened with water were intact after 2 hours of cuff inflation whereas two of 10 lubricated with 4% lignocaine solution had burst. Both of these had leaked at the site of cuff attachment to the tube.

Cefotaxime was given to neonates as treatment of infection in a dose of 25 mg/kg 12 hourly by intravenous injection. Blood samples taken by heel-prick were specially treated to minimize any effect of haemolysis on the hydrolysis of cefotaxime. The mean peak plasma concentrations of cefotaxime on the first, second and third days of therapy were 43, 40 and 52 mg/l, respectively, with mean plasma half lives of 4.
