Lannea acida A. Rich. is a native plant of West Africa used in traditional medicine against diarrhea, dysentery, rheumatism, and women infertility.

In Situ Ruthenium Catalyst Modification for the Conversion of Furfural to 1,2-Pentanediol.

Exploiting biomass to synthesise compounds that may replace fossil-based ones is of high interest in order to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources. 1,2-pentanediol and 1,5-pentanediol can be produced from furfural, furfuryl alcohol or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol following a metal catalysed hydrogenation/C-O cleavage procedure. Colloidal ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized with polyvinylpyrrolidone in situ modified with different organic compounds are able to produce 1,2-pentanediol directly from furfural in a 36% of selectivity at 125 °C under 20 bar of H pressure.

The role of procalcitonin (PCT) as a biomarker for sepsis in adults is well documented, while its role in infections affecting neonatal children remains controversial. Among these infections, Community-Acquired pneumonia (CAP) has been studied extensively, because it's the second cause of death in children in developing countries, and one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization in industrialized countries. The PubMed database and the Cochrane Library were used to search for the following keywords: CAP, procalcitonin, and children.

[The ATLS Courses in Italy. Twelve years experience].

ATLS Courses were introduced in the USA in 1980 and have been taught in Italy since 1994. Through theoretical lessons and practical sessions, their scope is to provide proper training for doctors with every kind of speciality who work in Emergency Departments, in order to prepare them to rapidly and effectively intervene on a patient who has suffered a serious trauma. Universities, in fact, do not prepare doctors adequately on this topic, while the application of the ATLS method in the first hours after trauma can effectively improve the prognosis of the patient.
