Introduction: In myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2), metabolic dysfunctions are frequent. Therefore, measurement of muscle mass and body composition by non-invasive methods could help in evaluating disease severity and progression. The aim of our study was to investigate, by means of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), whether DM2 patients have an alteration in their body composition and if this finding correlates with strength and motor performances.

Article Synopsis
  • Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is important in the Mediterranean diet due to its health benefits, including preventing heart disease and cancer, largely thanks to its antioxidant compounds.
  • This study focuses on improving extraction methods for EVOO using modern non-thermal technologies like ultrasound (US) and pulsed electric field (PEF), which could replace traditional processes that require kneading.
  • The new combined process significantly boosts oil production by 45%, lowers energy use by 35%, and increases the nutritional quality of EVOO by enhancing its beneficial compounds.

The biological substrate of persistent post-COVID-19 hyposmia is still unclear. However, as many neurodegenerative diseases present with smell impairment at onset, it may theoretically reflect degeneration within the central olfactory circuits. However, no data still exist regarding the post-COVID-19 patients.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is considered the prototype of motor neuron disease, characterized by motor neuron loss and muscle waste. A well-established pathogenic hallmark of ALS is mitochondrial failure, leading to bioenergetic deficits. So far, pharmacological interventions for the disease have proven ineffective.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied how to break down a medicine called furosemide (FUR) in water using a new method that combines two different techniques: hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) and electrical discharge (ED) plasma.
  • This combination makes more powerful chemicals called hydroxyl radicals that help clean the water without needing extra harmful stuff.
  • The results showed that using both HC and ED together is super effective, cleaning nearly all of the FUR in just 10 minutes, and can work even when other medicines are in the water too!
