Flying qubits encode quantum information in propagating modes instead of stationary discrete states. Although photonic flying qubits are available, the weak interaction between photons limits the efficiency of conditional quantum gates. Conversely, electronic flying qubits can use Coulomb interactions, but the weaker quantum coherence in conventional semiconductors has hindered their realization.

Polyethylene-Like Blends Amenable to Abiotic Hydrolytic Degradation.

Long-chain aliphatic polyester-18,18 (PE-18,18) exhibits high density polyethylene-like material properties and, as opposed to high density polyethylene (HDPE), can be recycled in a closed loop via depolymerization to monomers under mild conditions. Despite the in-chain ester groups, its high crystallinity and hydrophobicity render PE-18,18 stable toward hydrolysis even under acidic conditions for one year. Hydrolytic degradability, however, can be a desirable material property as it can serve as a universal backstop to plastic accumulation in the environment.

Isolation of Francisella tularensis by centrifugation of shell vial cell culture from an inoculation eschar.

A 52-year-old man was admitted to the hospital following the development of an inoculation eschar and fever six days after being bitten by a tick. He was clinically diagnosed as suffering from rickettsiosis. Eschar biopsy cultures on standard bacteriological media remained sterile.

Incidence of respiratory cancer among workers exposed to chloromethyl-ethers.

A factory in France had used technical-grade chloromethyl-methyl-ether in the manufacture of anion exchange resins since 1958. Technical-grade chloromethyl-methyl-ether contains a human lung carcinogen, bis-chloromethyl-ether. The purpose of this cohort study was to determine if workers at the factory whose jobs had involved potential exposure to technical chloromethyl-methyl-ether had a higher incidence of lung cancer than coworkers, or others without potential exposure.

[Pulmonary mycobacteriosis due to a non-chromogenic, slow-growing, unclassified mycobacterium].

A case is reported of a bilateral atypical mycobacterial infection, occurring in a 44 year old male with antecedent silicosis. Successful surgical resection was performed after 17 months of failed chemotherapy. The atypical mycobacterium which is unclassified is intermediate between Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare.
