The implementation of a deep and continuous sedation until death at home or in an institution for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) remains exceptional and requires a collegial reflection with the attending physician. Anxiolysis is used as a first line treatment and is usually sufficient.

Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) analyzes the neurodegeneration in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS) and quantifies optical atrophy. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness are decreased, and this structural change is correlated with visual function of patients, including contrast vision and visual field deviation. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the Bruch membrane opening minimum rim width (BMO) of the patients with NMO.

Management of a case of Enhanced S-cone syndrome with massive foveoschisis treated with pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade.

Goldmann Favre Syndrome (GFS) is a vitreoretinal degenerative disease with macular retinoschisis. The current treatment of foveoschisis is topical and oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. A 22-year-old male diagnosed with GFS presented a progressive decrease in vision of the right eye.

COVID-19 in-hospital mortality and mode of death in a dynamic and non-restricted tertiary care model in Germany.

Background: Reported mortality of hospitalised Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients varies substantially, particularly in critically ill patients. So far COVID-19 in-hospital mortality and modes of death under state of the art care have not been systematically studied.

Methods: This retrospective observational monocenter cohort study was performed after implementation of a non-restricted, dynamic tertiary care model at the University Medical Center Freiburg, an experienced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and extracorporeal membrane-oxygenation (ECMO) referral center.

A Single-Center Prospective Cohort Study on Postsplenectomy Sepsis and its Prevention.

Background: This study evaluated the impact of a dedicated outpatient service on vaccination uptake after splenectomy and on the incidence of postsplenectomy sepsis.

Methods: From 2009 to 2016 at the University Hospital Freiburg (Germany), asplenic patients were referred to a dedicated outpatient service, provided with comprehensive preventive care including vaccinations, and enrolled in a prospective cohort study. The impact of the service on vaccination uptake and the occurrence of severe sepsis/septic shock was compared between patients who had splenectomy (or were asplenic) within 3 months of study entry ("early study entry") and those who had splenectomy (or were asplenic) >3 months before study entry ("delayed study entry").
