Background: Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal disease that commonly affects calves under 6 weeks old. The causative agent, Cryptosporidium parvum, has been associated with the abundance of specific taxa in the faecal microbiome during active infection. However, the long-term impact of these microbiome shifts, and potential effects on calf growth and health have not yet been explored in depth.

Cross-talk between dendritic cells (DCs) and the intestinal epithelium is important in the decision to mount a protective immune response to a pathogen or to regulate potentially damaging responses to food antigens and the microbiota. Failures in this decision-making process contribute to the development of intestinal inflammation, making the molecular signals that pass between DCs and intestinal epithelial cells potential therapeutic targets. Until now, models with sufficient complexity to understand these interactions have been lacking.

Factors contained within mosquito saliva enhance transmission of mosquito-borne viruses to the mammalian host. In this issue, Wang et al (2024) identify AaNRP as a crucial pro-viral factor in mosquito saliva that promotes recruitment of Zika and dengue virus-susceptible myeloid cells.

In five experiments we measured the amplitude of the haemodynamic response to visual patterns using near infrared spectroscopy of the visual cortex. The patterns were gratings with bars that differed in chromaticity but not in luminance. In all experiments, with a wide range of chromaticities of the grating bars, the amplitude of the haemodynamic response increased with the separation of the chromaticities in the CIE 1976 UCS diagram.
