The need for an effective infection control program has always been an essential and integral part of the dental practice. Despite human and material efforts, occupational diseases continue to consume significant health care worldwide and the risk of "cross-infection" remains high. The European dental education requires the specialists in this field to have a high level of medical training, the standards for clinical skills and abilities including knowledge on the control of "cross infection" and the prevention of physical, chemical, and microbial contamination.

The frequency of the different lesions of oral mucosa detected in the patients presenting for outpatient dental care was 37.6%. Cheilitis, lesions in various areas of oral mucosa, and glossitis were prevalent.

By analysing in 2,769 patients the relation between bucco-dental pathology and age, it was noticed that the frequency of odontic affections decreases and that of chronic marginal periodontopathies increases with age. In the elderly, a tendency towards delaying the treatment of pulp inflammations and a very high percentage of extractions performed in the chronic marginal periodontopathies (81.8%) were noticed.
