A hallmark of many malignant tumors is dedifferentiated (immature) cells bearing slight or no resemblance to the normal cells from which the cancer originated. Tumor dedifferentiated cells exhibit a higher capacity to survive to chemo and radiotherapies and have the ability to incite tumor relapse. Inducing cancer cell differentiation would abolish their self-renewal and invasive capacity and could be combined with the current standard of care, especially in poorly differentiated and aggressive tumors (with worst prognosis).

Background: Nimotuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody anti-epidermal growth factor receptor, has been shown to improve survival and quality of life in patients with pediatric malignant brain tumor. It is necessary, however, to increase the objective response criteria to define the optimal therapeutic schedule. The aim of this study was to obtain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) quantitative information related to dimensions and morphology, molecular mobility and metabolic activity of the lesion and surroundings in order to evaluate any changes through time.

To investigate the effects of extracellular matrix components on cellular function, we cultured several types of ocular cells on substrates composed of extracellular matrix materials that were layered on culture dishes either as dried films or as gels. We measured cellular proliferation on these substrates and on a series of gels composed of varying proportions of rat tail tendon type I collagen and Matrigel, a commercially available extract of a basement membrane-producing murine tumor. In addition, we studied the biosynthesis of collagens and of proteoglycans by these cultured cells using [3H]-L-proline and [35S]-sulfate.
