To elucidate the neurobiological basis of cognition, which is dynamic and evolving, various methods have emerged to characterise time-varying functional connectivity (FC) and track the temporal evolution of functional networks. However, given a selection of regions, many of these methods are based on modelling all possible pairwise connections, diluting a potential focus of interest on individual connections. This is the case with the hidden Markov model (HMM), which relies on region-by-region covariance matrices across all pairs of selected regions, assuming that fluctuations in FC occur across all investigated connections; that is, that all connections are locked to the same temporal pattern.

Background: Non-Alzheimer's disease dementias, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD) can be difficult to characterize due to the predominance of distinct behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Widely used measurement tools lack structure and objectivity.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to use systematic direct observation of neuropsychiatric and behavioral symptoms, via the Neurobehavioral Rating Scale (NBRS), to characterize clusters of behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms in FTD and examine how selected symptom clusters correlate with structural neuroimaging.

Improving diagnostic accuracy of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using models of brain imaging data is a key goal of the field, but this objective is challenging due to the limited size and phenotypic depth of clinical datasets. Leveraging the phenotypic diversity in large non-clinical datasets such as the UK Biobank (UKBB), offers a potential solution to this problem. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether classification models trained on non-clinical populations will generalise to individuals with clinical OCD.

Unlabelled: Past work has shown that people with schizophrenia exhibit more cross-subject heterogeneity in their functional connectivity patterns. However, it remains unclear whether specific brain networks are implicated, whether common confounds could explain the results, or whether task activations might also be more heterogeneous. Unambiguously establishing the existence and extent of functional heterogeneity constitutes a first step toward understanding why it emerges and what it means clinically.
