Pilot comparison of outcome measures across chemical and surgical experimental models of chronic osteoarthritis in the rat (Rattus norvegicus).

Relatively little work has evaluated both the disease of osteoarthritis (OA) and clinically-relevant pain outcome measures across different OA models in rats. The objective of this study was to compare sensitivity, pain, and histological disease severity across chemical and surgical models of OA in the rat. Stifle OA was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats via intraarticular injection of monoiodoacetate (MIA) or surgical transection of anterior cruciate ligament and/or destabilization of medial meniscus (ACL+DMM or DMM alone).

Integrating Mental Health Concepts in the Care of Adults With Chronic Illnesses: A Curricular Enhancement.

Background: In the United States, inadequate attention has been given to the mental health needs of chronically ill adults, and the attempts to integrate mental health in primary care have fallen short.

Method: This article describes the beginning efforts of the faculty at Duke University School of Nursing to integrate mental health concepts into its adult-gerontological nurse practitioner and family nurse practitioner curricula.

Results: Competency and course content mapping activities revealed opportunities for mental health enhancement.

Building a bridge of trust: collaborative assessment with a person with serious mental illness.

Collaborative assessment utilizes psychological testing to help people make positive changes in their lives. Limited research has evaluated the utility of collaborative assessment for persons with serious mental illness. This case example uses the Personality Assessment Inventory to illustrate the usefulness of collaborative assessment with a person with serious mental illness.

Childhood traumatic stress and obesity in women: the intervening effects of PTSD and MDD.

In this study, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) were modeled as intervening variables in the relationship between childhood traumatic stress and weight outcomes in civilian women in the United States. Of the 148 participants, 72 had current PTSD, 64 had current MDD, and 32 had neither disorder. In separate single indirect effect models, there were significant indirect effects of both PTSD and depressive symptoms on body mass index and waist-hip ratio.

Quantification of Cry1Ac and Cry1F Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal proteins in selected transgenic cotton plant tissue types.

Quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to characterize the geographical (locations) and temporal (through 6 wk) expression of CrylAc, from Bacillus thuringiensis variety kurstaki, and Cry1F, from B. thuringiensis variety aizawai, in transgenic cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., plant structures.
