Objective: To determine if anaemia and blood transfusions in the perioperative, chemotherapy and radiation treatment periods are associated with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in high-grade endometrial cancer.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined patients at a single centre treated for high-grade endometrial cancer (2010-2023). This included International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) grade 3 endometrioid, serous, carcinosarcoma, mixed, clear cell, mucinous, dedifferentiated and undifferentiated histology.

Background: People living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at a greater risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), potentially due to the stimulation of inflammation by HIV infection. Inflammation-related DNA methylation signatures obtained in liquid biopsy, such as circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA), may serve as promising minimally invasive biomarkers that can inform diagnosis of HCC.

Methods: Using data from 249 individuals with HIV (114 individuals with normal liver conditions, 69 with fibrosis, 30 with cirrhosis, and 36 with HCC), we constructed a cfDNA methylation-based inflammation score (inflammation-DNAm score) based on 54 CpGs previously associated with circulating C-reactive protein concentrations.

Background: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders affecting millions worldwide. Despite the widespread adoption of next-generation sequencing (NGS) panels, there remains a critical gap in the genetically diverse and understudied African populations.

Methods: One hundred and thirty-five South African patients affected by various IRDs underwent NGS using a custom-targeted panel sequencing over 100 known genes.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the expression and location of fibroblast activation protein (FAP) in various liver tumors, focusing on cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), hepatocellular adenoma (HCA), and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH).
  • FAP immunostaining results showed that a high percentage of CCA exhibited moderate to strong FAP expression compared to other tumor types, indicating a significant distinction.
  • The findings suggest that FAP is consistently present in CCA tumor stroma regardless of clinical features, highlighting its potential as a target for future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in treating different CCA subtypes.

Patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) have decreasing plasma levels of coagulation factors and platelet counts with increased levels of D-dimers. Standard laboratory tests are used clinically to diagnose DIC and quantify the severity of the disease. In patients with cirrhosis, liver-derived plasma coagulation factor levels are reduced due to decreased hepatic synthesis, further exacerbated by extravascular redistribution of these proteins, causing prolongation of routine diagnostic coagulation tests.
