Giant clams ( and ) are large marine bivalves occupying tropical and subtropical reefs in the Indo-Pacific. Giant clam populations have declined in many areas of the Indo-Pacific and continue to be threatened by harvesting and environmental change. The small giant clam () occurs throughout the Indo-Pacific and has been subject to several phylogeographic studies across its range.

High dose melphalan (HDM) followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) remains the standard consolidation in transplant eligible multiple myeloma (MM) patients. The timing between HDM administration and hematopoietic stem cell return (HSCR) varies among institutions, with a 'rest period' of 48 hours (h) employed by some for patients with renal impairment (RI). We investigated the differences in hematopoietic recovery and HDM toxicity between MM patients with RI who had HSCR after 24 vs 48 h from HDM.

Background: Patients with precursors to multiple myeloma are dichotomised as having monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance or smouldering multiple myeloma on the basis of monoclonal protein concentrations or bone marrow plasma cell percentage. Current risk stratifications use laboratory measurements at diagnosis and do not incorporate time-varying biomarkers. Our goal was to develop a monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and smouldering multiple myeloma stratification algorithm that utilised accessible, time-varying biomarkers to model risk of progression to multiple myeloma.

Article Synopsis
  • - Achieving minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity in multiple myeloma treatment is linked to better patient outcomes, but MRD testing isn't commonly used in the UK outside of clinical trials.
  • - A multicolor flow cytometry (MCF) assay for MRD was validated, demonstrating high correlation with a reference center and stable results even with a delayed sample processing of up to 6 days.
  • - In a study of newly diagnosed patients, 17% were found MRD-negative after receiving standard induction therapy, indicating the potential for wider application of MRD testing in smaller labs and its relevance in everyday clinical practice.
