Microbiota of alveolar osteitis after permanent tooth extractions: A systematic review.

Alveolar osteitis (AO) or dry socket after dental extractions is a common postoperative complication characterized by the presence of severe pain associated with an empty socket. Although some authors consider AO to be related to an alteration of the blood clot, the underlying etiology remains unclear, and recent reports suggest that bacteria might play an important role. A systematic review was made, compiling relevant references from PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Scopus and the Web of Science databases to determine which bacteria have been identified in AO sockets after dental extractions.

Blood spatter in oral surgery: Prevalence and risk factors.

Background: Oral surgeons are exposed to blood spatter. The authors evaluated the prevalence of and risk factors for blood spatter in facial masks during oral surgery procedures.

Methods: The authors evaluated facial masks and caps of oral surgeons and assistants for blood spatter using the Kastle-Meyer test after different oral surgery procedures.

Background: To determine agreement among the most commonly used methods for assessing the gingival biotype.

Material And Methods: An electronic survey was sent to a sample of dentists practicing in Spain. The questionnaire was based on the evaluation of 5 cases involving different gingival biotype assessment methods.

A metagenomic study of patients with alveolar osteitis after tooth extraction. A preliminary case-control study.

Objective: To identify the microbiome in sockets with alveolar osteitis and compare it with a control group using metagenomic techniques.

Materials And Methods: A case-control study was conducted in subjects that had undergone a tooth extraction. Microbiological samples were taken from the sockets of 10 patients with dry socket after tooth extraction (AO group) and 10 patients in whom exodontia resulted in no postoperative complications (control group).
