The study assessed the severity of inflamaging, lipid peroxidation, as well as the state of antioxidant protection in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), depending on the ischemic stroke (IS). A prospective cohort study included 138 elderly patients (mean age 68±4 years). Of these, the 1st (control) group consisted of 30 people who did not have established COPD and cardiovascular diseases comparable in gender and age to the patients of the main group.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different genetic variants (SNPs) in certain genes related to the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) affect the severity of COVID-19 in patients, particularly focusing on cardiovascular disease and hypertension as potential risk factors.
  • Involving 100 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, the research classified them into severe and moderate cases based on specific clinical criteria, and analyzed genetic markers using advanced PCR methods.
  • Findings indicate that specific SNPs, such as those in the ACE1 and AGTR1 genes, are linked to a higher severity of COVID-19, with significant genetic differences identified between the severe and moderate cases.

Focusing on the molecular docking results, a series of 3,4-diarylisoxazoles, analogues of Combretastatin A4, bearing various substituents at the fifth position of the isoxazole ring and pharmacophore groups bioisosteric to methoxy substituent at ring B, were synthesized in good yields and high regioselectivity. Depending on the substituent at C5, three approaches were chosen for the construction of isoxazole ring, including nitrosation of gem-dihalocyclopropanes, nitrile oxide synthesis, and difluoromethoxylation of isoxazolone to afford 5-haloisoxazoles, 5-unsubstituted isoxazoles, and 5-difluoromethoxyisoxazoles, respectively. Isoxazoles and showed selective cytotoxicity and antitubulin inhibition properties , with pharmacodynamic profiles closely related to that of CA-4.

Background: COVID-19 is characterized by an acute inflammatory response with the formation of endothelial dysfunction and may affect arterial stiffness. Studies of cardio-ankle vascular index in COVID-19 patients with considered cardiovascular risk factors have not been conducted.

Objective: The purpose of our study was to assess the association between cardio-ankle vascular index and COVID-19 in hospitalized patients adjusted for known cardiovascular risk factors.

Tubulin-targeting agents attract undiminished attention as promising compounds for the design of anti-cancer drugs. Verubulin is a potent tubulin polymerization inhibitor, binding to colchicine-binding sites. In the present work, a series of verubulin analogues containing a cyclohexane or cycloheptane ring 1,2-annulated with pyrimidine moiety and various substituents in positions 2 and 4 of pyrimidine were obtained and their cytotoxicity towards cancer and non-cancerous cell lines was estimated.
