We introduce a method to design topological mechanical metamaterials that are not constrained by Newtonian dynamics. The unit cells in a mechanical lattice are subjected to active feedback forces that are processed through autonomous controllers preprogrammed to generate the desired local response in real time. As an example, we focus on the quantum Haldane model, which is a two-band system with nonreciprocal coupling terms, the implementation of which in mechanical systems requires violating Newton's third law.

Anthrax vaccines containing recombinant PA (rPA) as the only antigen face a stability issue: rPA forms aggregates in solution after exposure to temperatures ⩾40°C, thus losing its ability to form lethal toxin (LeTx) with Lethal Factor. To study rPA aggregation's impact on immune response, we subjected rPA to several time and temperature combinations. rPA treated at 50°C for 30min formed high mass aggregates when analyzed by gel electrophoresis and failed to form LeTx as measured by a macrophage lysis assay (MLA).

Neonatal cyanosis is relatively common. It is usually a consequence of cyanotic heart disease or a pulmonary disorder, and warrants a thorough and quick investigation. Mutations causing decreased affinity of hemoglobin to oxygen may change α1 to β2 binding.

Objective: Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) is associated with morbidity and mortality among very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. This study aimed to determine risk factors for PHH among VLBW infants with peri-intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH).

Study Design: This is a population-based cohort of VLBW infants of 24 to 28 weeks gestation, born in Israel from 1995 to 2012.

Article Synopsis
  • Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a condition in premature babies that can cause severe vision loss due to abnormal eye blood vessel development.
  • A study used B-scan ocular ultrasonography to assess the superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) in premature infants, comparing those diagnosed with ROP to those without it.
  • The findings revealed that 95.4% of eyes with ROP showed dilation of the SOV, whereas only 15.6% of eyes without ROP exhibited this dilation, indicating a potential link between ROP and changes in the SOV.
