We examined the ability of FIV p24Gag to induce systemic and mucosal FIV-specific immune responses when delivered as a nasal immunogen alone, or with a mucosal adjuvant, Escherichia coli heat labile toxin LT(R192G). Nasal immunization with p24Gag alone induced FIV-specific immune responses but overall responses were weak, transient, and/or present only in a few animals. Co-administration of LT(R192G) resulted in strong FIV-specific serum IgG and enhanced salivary IgA responses.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is an AIDS-inducing lentivirus that infects domestic cats worldwide. Because of its clinicopathologic similarities to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, the FIV/cat infection system is a valuable animal model for investigating comparative aspects of HIV-1 biology. An assay that detects quickly and efficiently FIV RNA in relatively small volume samples of feline blood or other body fluids would be of benefit in studies of viral transmission and antiviral interventions.

Peroxisome proliferators are endocrine disrupting chemicals that cause liver tumors in rodents but not humans. Although the receptor that mediates key hepatic effects, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha), and its endogenous ligands have been identified, the mechanism whereby these commonly used chemicals cause liver tumors in rodents has yet to be elucidated. Species differences in PPAR-alpha and DNA response elements may explain some of the variability in response upon exposure to peroxisome proliferators.

A cosmid containing a wild-type Anabaena PCC 7120 DNA fragment was found to suppress heterocyst differentiation, creating a Het phenotype in an otherwise wild-type strain. Curing of the cosmid restored the full wild-type Het+ Nif+ phenotype. The cosmid contains at least four genes encoding proteins with significant sequence similarity to enzymes involved in the synthesis of fatty acids.
