Secondary leukemia is a common late complication after exposure to cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. With the increase in the overall survival of cancer patients over the past 3 decades, treatment-related malignant neoplasms have increased in incidence. Secondary leukemias due to breast cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma have been studied in detail, but to our knowledge only a few case studies have reported secondary leukemias with previous lung cancer.

The role of the venous system in the pathogenesis of inflammatory neurological/neurodegenerative diseases remains largely unknown and underinvestigated. Aside from cerebral venous infarcts, thromboembolic events, and cerebrovascular bleeding, several inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), and optic neuritis, appear to be associated with venous vascular dysfunction, and the neuropathologic hallmark of these diseases is a perivenous, rather than arterial, lesion. Such findings raise fundamental questions about the nature of these diseases, such as the reasons why their pathognomonic lesions do not develop around the arteries and what exactly are the roles of cerebral venous inflammation in their pathogenesis.

Postmenopausal diabetic women are at greater risk for heart disease compared with men of similar age and with other risk factors. We examined the hypothesis that 17beta-estradiol and trivalent chromium inhibit secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 and oxidative stress in monocytes exposed to high glucose (HG). U937 human monocytes were cultured with HG (30 mM) with and without 17beta-estradiol (0-1000 nM) and chromium chloride (Cr(3+), 0-10 muM) at 37 degrees C for 24 h.
