There is growing evidence that a wide range of human diseases and physiological traits are influenced by genetic variation of cis-regulatory elements. We and others have shown that a subset of promoter elements, termed Epromoters, also function as enhancer regulators of distal genes. This opens a paradigm in the study of regulatory variants, as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within Epromoters might influence the expression of several (distal) genes at the same time, which could disentangle the identification of disease-associated genes.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers have created model peptides resembling CAHS proteins and tested them to understand their structural changes when exposed to desiccation-like conditions.
  • * Findings indicate that these peptides, which are mainly disordered, form more structured, helical shapes under desiccation, suggesting they could help develop new synthetic materials for protection against drying.

Anti-estrogenic therapy is established in the management of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer. However, to overcome resistance and improve therapeutic outcome, novel strategies are needed such as targeting widely recognized aberrant epigenetics. The study aims to investigate the combination of the aromatase inhibitor exemestane and the histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and antioxidant α-lipoic acid in ER-positive breast cancer cells.

Understanding the collective behavior of ions at charged surfaces is of paramount importance for geological and electrochemical processes. Ions screen the surface charge, and interfacial fields break the centro-symmetry near the surface, which can be probed using second-order nonlinear spectroscopies. The effect of electrolyte concentration on the nonlinear optical response has been semi-quantitatively explained by mean-field models based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation.

Mixed-valence tungsten bronzes AWO (A = alkali metal, NH, .) are a series of compounds with adaptive structural and compositional features that make them a hot research topic in thermoelectrics, electrochromics, catalysis or energy applications in battery electrodes. The mixed hexagonal lithium ammonium bronze Li(NH)WO is a new member of this structural family whose properties are compared to those of the pure hexagonal tungsten bronze (NH)WO.
