Circulating mature red blood cells (RBCs) from patients and mice with sickle cell disease (SCD) abnormally retain mitochondria, a factor shown to contribute to the disease's pathobiology. To further understand the functional implications of RBC mitochondria retention in SCD, we used mitochondria inhibitors and metabolites/substrates from the tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis pathways (ADP, glutamate, malate, pyruvate, succinate or all metabolites combined) and examined RBC bioenergetics, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, calcium flux and hydration. In RBCs from sickle mice, mitochondria inhibition reduced ATP levels by 30%-60%, whereas control RBCs were unaffected.

The diagnostic workup of primary lymphedema includes lymphoscintigraphy, a diagnostic test that provides objective data derived from the characteristics of the lymphatic flow and the lymphatic nodes. Several empirical scoring systems have been proposed with the aim of harmonizing the procedure. Here we comment the latest one, reflecting on the relevance of these tools to make possible multicenter research, based on intraobserver and interobserver reliability with the aim to, in the long run, improve patient outcomes.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), a pestivirus in the family , is a major livestock pathogen. Horizontal transmission leads to acute transient infections via the oronasal route, whereas vertical transmission might lead to the birth of immunotolerant, persistently infected animals. In both cases, BVDV exerts an immunosuppressive effect, predisposing infected animals to secondary infections.
