Ti surfaces must exhibit antibacterial activity without cytotoxicity to promote bone reconstruction and prevent infection simultaneously. In this study, we employed a two-step electrochemical treatment process, namely, microarc oxidation (MAO) and cathodic electrochemical deposition (CED), to modify Ti surfaces. During the MAO step, a porous TiO (pTiO) layer with a surface roughness of approximately 2.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. The 5-year survival rate in patients with breast cancer ranges from 74 to 82 %. Sentinel lymph node biopsy has become an alternative to axillary lymph node dissection for nodal staging.

Axillary lymph node enlargement following sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is often difficult to accurately diagnose. In keeping with the characteristically tortuous and aberrant pattern of tumor neovasculature, metastatic lymph nodes exhibit peripheral and mixed vascularity, resulting in a microvasculature that is often difficult to visualize. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) with Sonazoid, a new generation contrast agent for ultrasonography, allows for the visualization of lymph node microvessels and may enable a more accurate evaluation of lymph node metastasis.

A variety of jumps has in the past been identified in diffusion of atoms on 1D channeled surfaces. To establish the jump processes important in diffusion on a 2D surface, the movement of individual Pd atoms has been examined on W(110). From the distribution of displacements of Pd at high temperatures, double jumps are found along the close-packed <111>.

Data on diffusion and dissociation of single Pt clusters on Pt(111), available for the first time from field ion microscope observations, are used to make predictions about nanoscale phenomena by solving the mean-field differential equations for growth. In the submonolayer regime, cluster dissociation is found to be much more important than diffusion of clusters in reducing the saturation island density. Cluster dissociation also significantly affects the nucleation of a second layer on top of existing clusters and must be considered on an equal footing with interlayer transport over cluster edges.

Usefulness of needle electromyography (EMG) in the thoracic paraspinal muscles was investigated in 22 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). All patients revealed denervation changes in the thoracic paraspinal muscles, though the EMG findings were insufficient to fulfill the WFN criteria of lower motor neuron sign. We could not diagnose three patients as having ALS at their first visits by conventional EMG.

A comparative study of congenital biliary dilatation with pancreatico-biliary maljunction in 15 children and 16 adults was undertaken. Cystic and fusiform dilatation of the common bile duct was seen in 9 and 6 cases respectively in the child group, with 8 and 8 cases respectively in the adult group. Cholangiographically, neither the length of the common channel nor the type of pancreatico-ductal union varied significantly between groups.

A 63-year-old female began to have progressive gait disturbance at the age of 50. Neurologic examination revealed weakness and hypotonus of bilateral leg muscles. Deep tendon reflexes were hypoactive with positive Babinski sign and vibration sense was diminished in the legs.

An 80-year-old man, complaining of multiple fungating growth on his right leg, was hospitalized. A review of his previous history revealed that he had undergone three operations because of repeating osteomyelitis. A clinical examination showed that a tumor was localized on the right leg.
