Because of the low bone quality in the posterior maxilla, edentulism in this area often results in a resorbed osseous structure and a pneumatized maxillary sinus, which makes dental implant surgery in the posterior maxilla a challenge. Two main surgical approaches are available for the sinus lift procedure: lateral and crestal. Improvement of the maxillary sinus floor elevation technique and increase in predictability are desirable.
