2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone (benzophenone-1; BP-1) is an UV stabilizer primarily used to prevent polymer degradation and deterioration in quality due to UV irradiation. Recently, BP-1 has been reported to bioaccumulate in human bodies by absorption through the skin and has the potential to induce health problems including endocrine disruption. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disease characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and oxidative stress in the placenta. During the last trimester of gestation, calcium (Ca(2+)) transport from mother to fetus increases dramatically in response to the increased demand for Ca(2+) caused by bone mineralization in the fetus. Ca(2+) supplementation can significantly reduce the incidence and severity of preeclampsia or delay its onset.

Aberrant expression of casein kinase 2 (CK2) is associated with tumor progression; however, the molecular mechanism by which CK2 modulates tumorigenesis is incompletely understood. In this paper, we show that CK2α phosphorylates the C-terminal domain of the nuclear receptor corepressor (NCoR) at Ser-2436 to stabilize the NCoR against the ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation pathway. Importantly, NCoR promoted the invasion of esophageal cancer cells in a CK2-dependent manner.

Manipulating acetylation status of key gene targets is likely to be crucial for effective cancer therapy. In this study, we utilized green tea catechins, epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) to examine the regulation of androgen receptor acetylation in androgen-dependent prostate cancer cells by histone acetyl-transferase (HAT) activity. EC, EGC and EGCG induced prostate cancer cell death, suppressed agonist-dependent androgen receptor (AR) activation and AR-regulated gene transcription.

Synthetic retinoid N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide (4-HPR) has been reported to exhibit anti-invasive and anti-metastatic activities by suppressing the enzymatic activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we show that 4-HPR blocks the activity of MMP-9 in two ways: by reducing phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced MMP-9 secretion and by suppressing cell invasion through the downregulation of MMP-9 gene transcription in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. 4-HPR inhibits the transcriptional activity of MMP-9 by reducing the DNA-binding activity of NF-κB on the MMP-9 promoter as well as by inhibiting the degradation of IκBα, leading to cytoplasmic accumulation of NF-κB.
