The authors describe a surgical procedure to 'fine-tune' the tibial slope during high-tibial osteotomy. Fifteen consecutive patients were treated for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee using a temporary unilateral external fixator and accompanying internal fixator composed of two plates (with different sized space). All 15 patients were evaluated by measuring femoro-tibial angles (FTAs) in the frontal plane, and using the proximal tibial anatomical axis (PTAA) and the posterior tibial cortex (PTC) methods to assess tibial slope in the sagittal plane.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe antioxidant activity of three major polyamine conjugates, N,N'-dicoumaroyl-putrescine (DCP), N-p-coumaroyl-N'-feruloylputrescine (CFP), and N,N'-diferuloyl-putrescine (DFP) isolated from corn bran, and their related hydroxycinnamic acids, p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid, were evaluated by three antioxidant in vitro assay systems, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and superoxide and hydroxyl radicals generated by enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions. Additionally, five phenolic compounds were evaluated for melanogenesis inhibitory activity using mushroom tyrosinase and B16 melanoma cells. Most of the phenolic compounds significantly scavenged DPPH, superoxide, and hydroxyl radicals in a dose-dependent manner.

This Account summarizes various methods of organizing zeolite microcrystals into two-dimensional functional entities such as monolayers, multilayers, and patterned monolayers on various substrates and three-dimensional functional entities such as microballs and protein-zeolite composite fibrils. In the case of monolayer assembly, various types of linkages and substrates, factors that govern the rate, degree of coverage, degree of close packing, degree of uniform orientation, and average binding strength between each crystal and the substrate are described. The current and future applications of the organized products are also discussed.

However, measurements of their 3NLO responses have not been possible due to the lack of methods to prepare optically transparent QD-incorporating zeolite films supported on optically transparent substrates and to confine QDs only within zeolite interiors. We found that the zeolite-Y films grown on indium-tin-oxide-coated glass plates (Ygs) remain firmly bonded to the substrates during ion exchange with Pb2+ ions, drying, and formation of PbS QDs by treating Pb2+ ions with H2S.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe carried out time-resolved luminescence and transient absorption studies of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(ii) complex, Ru(bpy)3(2+) assembled in the supercages of zeolites X and Y exchanged with various alkali metal cations. The average lifetime of the luminescence decay, a measure of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) rate, of Ru(bpy)3(2+)* was found to decrease with increasing the electron-acceptor strength of the host which is represented by the Sanderson's electronegativity scale. This result strongly suggests that the zeolite host plays the role of electron acceptor for Ru(bpy)3(2+)*.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA unidirectional ensemble of hemicyanine molecules was prepared by inserting the molecules into the vertical channels of a uniformly oriented zeolite (silicalite-1) film grown on a glass substrate. Fluorescence from this sample excited with light polarized along the vertical channel was 50 times larger than that excited with light polarized orthogonal to the vertical channel direction. These vertically aligned hemicyanine dyes were used to determine the ratio of the molecular hyperpolarizability components beta(zxx)/beta(zzz) of hemicyanine.

Type-I DSSCs are the DSSCs in which electrons are injected from the adsorbed dyes by photoexcitation of the dyes followed by electron injection from the excited dyes to TiO2 (pathway A). Type-II DSSCs are the DSSCs in which electrons are injected not only by pathway A but also by direct one-step electron injection from the dyes to TiO2 by photoexcitation of the dye-to-TiO2 charge-transfer (DTCT) bands (pathway B).

Novel core-shell silicate particles, each of which consists of a silicalite-1 zeolite crystal core and mesoporous shell (ZCMS), were synthesized for the first time. The ZCMS core-shell particles are unique because they are of pseudohexagonal prismatic shape and have hierarchical porosity of both a uniform microporous core and a mesoporous shell coexisting in a particle framework.

NGSPR sensors with line width less than 50 nm show narrow reflection peaks from the excitation of localized surface plasmon polaritons. The wavelength of resonance reflection can be customized by adjusting the grating period.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe prepared silicalite-1 microcrystal (MC) monolayers on a Si wafer using two different types of molecular linkages, namely, through chloropropyl (CP) groups and through CP/polyethylene imine/CP groups. Whereas the scanning electron microscope images of the two MC monolayers look very much alike but hardly give any information on the nature of molecular linkage between the monolayers and the substrate, their reflectivity curves are distinctively different, despite the fact that the thicknesses of the molecular linkage layers ( approximately 10-20 A) are negligibly small compared to the thicknesses of MC monolayers, ( approximately 3200 A). On the basis of the atomic force microscopic images of the MC surfaces, a rough surface layer with the thickness of approximately 160 A was introduced onto the surface of each MC to conduct a meaningful simulation of the curves with the recursive Parratt formalism.

While the QDs are readily expelled from zeolite interior upon exposure of the MX QD-incorporating zeolite Y ([MX]-Y) to the ambient atmosphere due to moisture adsorption, they remain tightly confined within zeolites even after exposure to the moist atmosphere for several weeks when the surfaces were silylated with various silylating agents. Methods And Results: Fifty patients (67+/-10 years, 30 male) with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) who developed no-reflow phenomenon during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between June 2001 and May 2003 comprised the study group, which was divided into 2 groups: group I [25 patients, 67+/-10 years, 13 male; adenosine (24 microg/ml) alone in addition to nitrate] and group II [25 patients, 66+/-9 years, 17 male; combined intracoronary administration of adenosine and nicorandil (2 mg/ml) in addition to nitrate]. In-hospital and 6-month major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after PCI were compared between the 2 groups.
Patients readmitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) have a significantly higher mortality rate. The role of intensivists in judging when to discharge patients from the ICU is very important. We undertook this study to evaluate the effect of the intensivists' discharge decision-making on readmission to ICU.
