Article Synopsis
  • Microplastics are released during the preparation of homemade saline solutions, primarily from the tearing of powder packets and mixing with water, posing risks to humans and the environment.
  • The study utilized polypropylene nasal irrigation bottles and compared microplastic content in samples with and without sodium chloride, revealing no significant difference in microplastic levels between the two groups.
  • Identified polymers included polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate, with control samples containing more fibers, while the powder-added samples had a higher proportion of fragments.

Background And Objectives: This study compared nasal provocation test (NPT) results between groups with and without chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) to investigate whether CRSwNP affects the response to the intranasal allergen challenge.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients who had undergone the NPT, multiple allergen simultaneous test (MAST), and paranasal sinus computed tomography. Patients were diagnosed with CRSwNP based on findings from nasal endoscopy and paranasal sinus computed tomography.

  • * An adaptive artifact removal technique was proposed that uses a modified least-mean-square filter, leveraging previous artifact data for more effective cancellation across different frequencies and pulse widths of TENS.
  • * Validation tests with 12 participants showed a significant improvement in Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) by 10.3 dB, restoring prosthetic control performance to levels comparable to those without TENS interference.

Article Synopsis
  • * The recent term MAFLD improves upon NAFLD by including metabolic dysfunction in its diagnosis, simplifying the criteria for identification.
  • * A new classification named steatotic liver disease (SLD) has emerged in 2023, which further categorizes liver diseases based on metabolic dysfunction, with the term MASLD gaining support for its clearer diagnostic approach.

Body fossils set limits on feasible reconstructions of functional capacity and behavior in theropod dinosaurs, but do not document in-life behaviors. In contrast, trace fossils such as footprints preserve in-life behaviors that can potentially test and enhance existing reconstructions. Here, we demonstrate how theropod trackways can be used as indirect evidence of pre-avian aerial behavior, expanding the approaches available to study vertebrate flight origins.

Objectives: Microplastics originating from plastic materials may pose risks to human health. This study investigated the presence of microplastics in nasal irrigation fluids collected from reused bottles, focusing on the duration of bottle usage.

Methods: Readily available nasal irrigation bottles made of polypropylene were purchased.

Opioids effectively manage perioperative pain but have numerous adverse effects. Opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) eliminates intraoperative opioid use; however, evidence for its use in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is limited. This study assessed the effect of OFA using ketamine in VATS patients compared to opioid-sparing anesthesia (OSA).

Article Synopsis
  • * Findings revealed that women with UL had a higher incidence rate of T2DM compared to those without, with a hazard ratio indicating a significantly increased risk, particularly in those who did not undergo myomectomy.
  • * The results suggested that young women with UL are at a greater risk of developing T2DM, but undergoing myomectomy may reduce this risk.

Background: Computed tomography (CT)-guided transthoracic needle biopsy (TNB) could damage lung structures and may disseminate tumor cells into the airway, blood vessels, and pleural cavity, affecting post-operative outcomes. Several studies have investigated the effects of TNB on the prognosis of patients, but the effects remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether TNB increases the risk of recurrence of resected stage IA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Background: Recent evidences showed that resection of lung tumor post-targeted therapy has shown progression-free survival (PFS) benefits in initially unresectable patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate pathologic findings of resected lung tumor samples in patients who have undergone prior epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment, and also to assess the prognostic factors related to outcomes after resection.

Methods: The deidentified data of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients admitted to seven university hospitals affiliated with the Catholic University of Korea were obtained from the Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW) database.

The importance of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) is increasing, and various methods have been developed. Among the developed BCI methods, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) are favored due to their non-invasive feature and compact device sizes. EEG monitors the electrical potentials generated by the activation of neurons, and fNIRS monitors the blood flow also generated by neurons, resulting in signals with different properties between the two methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Human nasal cavity samples were analyzed for the presence of microplastics.
  • Microplastics were found, with the most common types being polyethylene, polyester, acrylic polymer, and polypropylene.
  • More research is necessary to understand the clinical effects of microplastics on the human nasal cavity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the potential renoprotective effects of fenofibrate in preventing or delaying end-stage renal disease in patients already on statins.
  • Using data from the Korea National Health Information Database, researchers compared 413,715 fenofibrate users to the same number of non-users, focusing on the incidence of end-stage renal disease.
  • Results showed a significantly lower incidence of end-stage renal disease in fenofibrate users, particularly among those with hypertension, proteinuria, or low estimated glomerular filtration rate, suggesting a need for further research through randomized controlled trials.

This study proposed an optimized histogel construction method for histological analysis by applying lung cancer patient-derived organoids (PDOs) to the developed histo-pillar strip. Previously, there is the cultured PDOs damage problem during the histogel construction due to forced detachment of the Matrigel spots from the 96-well plate bottom. To address this issue, we cultured PDO on the proposed Histo-pillar strips and then immersed them in 4% paraformaldehyde fixation solution to self-isolate PDO without damage.

Background: The beneficial effects of fenofibrate on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) outcomes in patients with diabetes and statin treatment are unclear. We investigated the effects of fenofibrate on all-cause mortality and ASCVD in patients with diabetes, high triglyceride (TG) levels and statin treatment.

Methods: We performed a nationwide propensity-score matched (1:1) cohort study using data from the National Health Information Database in the Republic of Korea from 2010 to 2017.

  • The study analyzed the link between exercise habits and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in thyroid cancer patients who underwent thyroidectomy.
  • Researchers reviewed data from over 69,000 patients and categorized them based on their exercise habits before and after surgery.
  • Results showed that those who exercised regularly had a significantly lower risk of developing T2DM compared to those who did not exercise at all, indicating the importance of maintaining physical activity for patient health post-surgery.

Hypoxia is a representative tumor characteristic associated with malignant progression in clinical patients. Engineered in vitro models have led to significant advances in cancer research, allowing for the investigation of cells in physiological environments and the study of disease mechanisms and processes with enhanced relevance. In this study, we propose a U-shape pillar strip for a 3D cell-lumped organoid model (3D-COM) to study the effects of hypoxia on lung cancer in a high-throughput manner.

Article Synopsis
  • * Conducted as a double-blind, phase III trial, it involved 185 adults with specific HbA1c and LDL-C levels, and after 16 weeks of treatment, the combination group showed significant improvements in both HbA1c and LDL-C compared to those only on either drug.
  • * The results indicated that using metformin with atorvastatin led to better management of blood sugar and cholesterol levels, suggesting this combination could be beneficial for patients struggling to control their conditions with lifestyle changes alone. *
