The role of biomarkers in cancer treatment varies significantly depending on the cancer stage. Thus, in clinical practice, tailoring biomarkers to meet the specific needs and challenges of each cancer stage can increase the precision of treatment. Because they reflect underlying genetic alterations that influence cancer progression, copy number variation (CNV) biomarkers can play crucial prognostic roles.

Background: Increased Galectin 3-binding protein (LGALS3BP) serum levels have been used to assess hepatic fibrosis stages and the severity of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Considering the crucial role of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in the emergence of these diseases, the present study tested the hypothesis that LGALS3BP regulates the TGF-β1 signaling pathway.

Methods: The expression levels of LGALS3BP and TGFB1 were analyzed in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and HCC.

Dysregulated DNA methylation in cancer is critical in the transcription machinery associated with cancer progression. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype, but no treatment targeting TNBC biomarkers has yet been developed. To identify specific DNA methylation patterns in TNBC, methyl-binding domain protein 2 (MBD) sequencing data were compared in TNBC and the three other major breast cancer subtypes.

Background And Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) encompasses a broad and continuous spectrum of liver diseases ranging from fatty liver to steatohepatitis. The intricate interactions of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors in the development and progression of MASLD remain elusive. Here, we aimed to achieve an integrative understanding of the genomic and transcriptomic alterations throughout the progression of MASLD.

Purpose: In patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), early and accurate outcome prediction is crucial for making treatment decisions and informing their relatives. A previous study reported an association between high phosphate levels and unfavorable neurological outcomes after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC); however, its prognostic value was insufficient when used independently. Therefore, this study aimed to validate the usefulness of the phosphate-to-albumin ratio (PAR) in predicting neurological outcomes and in-hospital mortality by incorporating albumin, another known prognostic indicator.

Purpose: Early identification of sepsis with a poor prognosis in the emergency department (ED) is crucial for prompt management and improved outcomes. This study aimed to examine the predictive value of sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA), quick SOFA (qSOFA), lactate to albumin ratio (LAR), C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR), and procalcitonin to albumin ratio (PAR), obtained in the ED, as predictors for 28-day mortality in patients with sepsis and septic shock.

Materials And Methods: We included 3499 patients (aged ≥19 years) from multicenter registry of the Korean Shock Society between October 2015 and December 2019.

Advancing the technologies for cellular reprogramming with high efficiency has significant impact on regenerative therapy, disease modeling, and drug discovery. Biophysical cues can tune the cell fate, yet the precise role of external physical forces during reprogramming remains elusive. Here the authors show that temporal cyclic-stretching of fibroblasts significantly enhances the efficiency of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) production.

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are essential antioxidant enzymes that prevent massive superoxide radical production and thus protect cells from damage induced by free radicals. However, this concept has rarely been applied to directly impede the function of driver oncogenes, thus far. Here, leveraging efforts from SOD model complexes, we report the novel finding of biomimetic copper complexes that efficiently scavenge intracellularly generated free radicals and, thereby, directly access the core consequence of colorectal cancer suppression.

Cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) have been suggested to be responsible for chemoresistance and tumor recurrence owing to their self-renewal capacity and differentiation potential. Although WEE1 is a strong candidate target for anticancer therapies, its role in ovarian CSCs is yet to be elucidated. Here, we show that WEE1 plays a key role in regulating CSC properties and tumor resistance to carboplatin via a microRNA-dependent mechanism.
