Thrombosis and recanalization of straight sinus.

We describe a case of a 14-year-old boy who presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting, headache, and mental status changes. Noncontrast computed tomography scan of the brain in the emergency department revealed bilateral thalamic and striatocapsular infarcts. The patient was diagnosed with possible thrombosis of the thalamostriate veins, which was confirmed with urgent magnetic resonance venography (MRV).

Rapidly progressing glioblastoma resembling brain abscess in leukemia.

A 63-year-old man with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and a prosthetic aortic valve was hospitalized because of a mastoiditis, complicated by meningitis and epileptic seizures. Two weeks later he developed a lesion in the right temporal lobe. A brain abscess was suspected.

Evaluation of meningioma aggressiveness by (99m)Tc-Tetrofosmin SPECT.

Objectives: Although meningiomas usually have a benign clinical course, atypical and malignant types of this brain tumor are associated with high recurrence rates and poor outcome; thus, DNA ploidy and S-phase -- as determined by DNA flow cytometry -- are useful indicators of their biological behavior. Brain single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has been suggested as a potentially useful modality for the metabolic assessment of various brain tumors. This study evaluated whether (99m)Tc-Tetrofosmin ((99m)Tc-TF) uptake correlates with meningioma proliferative activity, as assessed by flow cytometry analysis.

Meningiomas account for about 30% of all intracranial tumors. Evaluation of their proliferation rate is useful for assessing their biological behavior. We evaluated prospectively whether (99m)Tc-Tetrofosmin ((99m)Tc-TF) uptake in meningiomas correlates with cellular proliferative activity and with tumor grade.

Invasive tumors, including gliomas, utilize proteinases to degrade extracellular matrix components and diffuse into the adjacent tissues or migrate toward distant ones. In addition, proteinase activity is required for the formation of new blood vessels within the tumor. Levels of the proteinase matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) are highly increased in gliomas.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum associated with narcolepsy-cataplexy.

We describe a 24-year-old man with episodes of intense desire to sleep for periods ranging from 2min to 3h, episodes of generalized weakness and inability to speak without alteration of consciousness, frequent hypnagogic hallucinations during sleep and occasionally transient paralysis of limbs upon awakening. Brain MRI demonstrated elevation of the third ventricle, a characteristic lack of depiction of the corpus callosum and extension of the bihemispheric fissure to the third ventricle. We assume that structural changes of the base of frontal lobes, diencephalon and brainstem, can be accountable for symptomatic narcolepsy and cataplexy.

Association of estrogen receptor-alpha gene polymorphisms with stroke risk in patients with metabolic syndrome.

Objective: The vascular protective effects of estrogens are mediated by their binding to the two known estrogen receptors. In this study, we examine the association of stroke with two common polymorphisms of the ESR1 gene in patients with metabolic syndrome.

Materials And Methods: DNA from 130 patients hospitalized for ischemic stroke and 240 healthy controls were genotyped for ESR1 PvuII and XbaI polymorphisms.
