Background: Although several studies have reported the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for adhesive capsulitis (AC), research on pharmacopuncture therapy for AC remains limited. We compared the effectiveness and safety of pharmacopuncture and physiotherapy for AC.

Methods: This pragmatic, randomized, controlled, parallel-group pilot study enrolled patients with limitations of shoulder movement and a numeric rating scale (NRS) score for shoulder pain ≥5 randomized (1:1) to the pharmacopuncture therapy (PPT) and physiotherapy (PT) groups.

Background: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-pharmacological treatment that works by delivering electrical currents via electrodes attached to the skin at the site of pain. It can be an alternative to pharmacological treatments. The mechanism of action of TENS for pain relief is related to the inhibition of the transmission of painful stimuli, release of endogenous opioids, and reduced muscle ischaemia of the uterus.

Background: Musculoskeletal symptoms, such as neck pain and low back pain (LBP) are common after a traffic accident (TA). While motion-style acupuncture treatment (MSAT) is effective in relieving pain, MSAT using traction (T-MSAT) has rarely been studied, and evidence for its efficacy and safety is lacking. To address this gap, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of T-MSAT for pain and functional disturbances in patients with acute LBP caused by a TA.

The number of traffic accidents (TAs) is rising each year, and the severity of injuries can vary. Many people experience limitations in activities of daily living following TAs, affecting their quality of life. In pregnant women, even simple injuries caused by a TA could lead to unfavorable obstetric outcomes.

Background: Hominis placental (HPP) extract has been approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea for treating chronic liver diseases and postmenopausal syndrome. However, its efficacy and safety for treating chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD) remains unclear. We aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of HPP for treating chronic TMD compared with physical therapy (PT).

Evidence regarding the use of Korean medicine (KM) for the conservative treatment of meniscus tears remains lacking. We aimed to evaluate clinical effectiveness and long-term follow-up outcomes in patients undergoing integrative KM treatment for meniscus tears. We analyzed the electronic medical records (EMRs) of 86 patients with meniscus tears and administered a follow-up survey.

In mouse B lymphocytes, an unidentified slow-activating voltage-dependent current resembling the characteristics of the Calhm family ion channel (I) was investigated. RT-PCR analysis revealed the presence of Calhm2 and 6 transcripts, with subsequent whole-cell patch-clamp studies indicating that the I is augmented by heat, alkaline pH, and low extracellular [Ca]. Overexpression of Calhm2, but not Calhm6, in N2A cells recapitulated I.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in South Korea analyzed fibromyalgia treatment trends from 2011 to 2018 using national health insurance data, focusing on patient demographics and treatment approaches.
  • The research found that visits to internal medicine departments increased significantly, while rates of non-pharmacological treatments like physical therapy and acupuncture declined.
  • Prescription rates for analgesics, relaxants, and antidepressants grew, with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs showing the highest increase, and women tended to have longer prescription durations and higher medication combination rates.

This study aims to analyze the types and cost of infertility care provided in a clinical setting to examine the changes of healthcare utilization for infertility after the 2017 launch of assisted reproductive technology (ART) health insurance coverage in South Korea. Health Insurance Review Assessment-National Patient Sample data from 2016 and 2018 were analyzed comparatively. Data related to receiving medical service under the International Classification of Diseases 10th revision code N97 (female infertility) or N46 (male infertility) at least once were analyzed, including patients' characteristics and healthcare utilization (type of healthcare facility and treatment approach).

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the cost utility of pharmacopuncture in comparison with usual care for patients with chronic neck pain.

Methods: A 12-week, multicenter, pragmatic randomized controlled trial was conducted, and 101 patients suffering from chronic neck pain for more than six months were randomly placed into the pharmacopuncture and usual care groups to receive four weeks of treatment and 12 weeks of follow-up observations. The quality-adjusted life year (QALY) was calculated using EQ-5D and SF-6D.

Despite the importance of antigen-specific T cells in infectious disease, characterizing and tracking clonally amplified T cells during the progression of a patient's symptoms remain unclear. Here, we performed a longitudinal, in-depth single-cell multiomics analysis of samples from asymptomatic, mild, usual severe, and delayed severe patients of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our in-depth analysis revealed that hyperactive or improper T-cell responses were more aggressive in delayed severe patients.

Commencing with the breakdown of immune tolerance, multiple pathogenic factors, including synovial inflammation and harmful cytokines, are conjointly involved in the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Intervening to mitigate some of these factors can bring a short-term therapeutic effect, but other unresolved factors will continue to aggravate the disease. Here we developed a ceria nanoparticle-immobilized mesenchymal stem cell nanovesicle hybrid system to address multiple factors in rheumatoid arthritis.

Previous studies have reported pain reduction after Korean medicine (KM) treatment in patients with fractures. However, these studies were limited by small sample sizes and short observation periods. To address these limitations, we aimed to analyze the outcomes of patients with traumatic fractures who received integrative KM treatment and investigate their long-term progress through follow-up observations.

Context: Rotator cuff tear is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain and has become a prominent disease most frequently treated by surgery.

Objectives: To investigate the long-term therapeutic effect of integrative Korean medicine (KM) as a conservative treatment in treating rotator cuff tears.

Design: A multicenter observational study.

Purpose: Chronic lower back pain (LBP) is a major global health concern. Pharmacopuncture has been widely used to treat LBP in Korea; however, randomized clinical trials (RCT) or active control have not been conducted to evaluate its effectiveness. Therefore, this RCT aimed to compare the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture and physical therapy (PT) for the treatment of chronic LBP.

Context: Shoulder disorders impair the ability to work. In most cases, the primary symptoms caused by shoulder disorders consist of pain and limitations in the range of motion.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of motion style acupuncture treatment (MSAT), a conservative treatment modality for shoulder disorders.

  • A study analyzing HIRA-NPS data from 2010 to 2019 focused on 7,530 endometriosis patients in Korea to examine treatment trends and costs.
  • Surgery utilization slightly decreased (from 16.3% in 2010 to 12.7% in 2019), while prescriptions for dienogest increased significantly after it was covered by national health insurance.
  • Despite shifts towards conservative medication treatments over surgical options, overall healthcare costs per person remained stable during the study period.
