We investigated the impact of imbalanced diets on colonic microbiota, concentrations of short chain fatty acid in colonic digesta and serum immunoglobulins (Igs) of growing rats. Compared to the control diet, consuming diets high in fat, sucrose, or processed meat, or low in iron, increased the abundance of the pathogenic bacteria such as Clostridium, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella species, and decreased the beneficial bacteria, like Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, Akkermansia, Phascolarctobacterium, Alistipes, and butyrate producing species of bacteria in the colon of growing rats.

After a 10 day acclimatization period, rats received for 8 days the test diets containing either HC or a synthetic amino acid (SAA) mixture as the sole source of nitrogen or a protein-free (PF) diet (n = 12 per treatment). Acidocin 1B was found to be heat stable, because it lost no activity when it was heated up to 95 degrees C for 60 min. It retained approximately 67% of the initial activity after storage for 30 days at 4 degrees C, and 50% of its initial activity after 30 days at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C.
