Article Synopsis
  • Olaparib and niraparib, PARP inhibitors used in ovarian cancer treatment, are effective but cause high rates of nausea and vomiting in patients, with no established antiemetic guidelines.
  • A study involving 134 patients aimed to monitor the incidence of nausea and vomiting over 21 days, finding that only 21.7% received preventive antiemetic therapy.
  • The overall vomiting incidence was 16.3%, with lower rates for niraparib (10.3%) compared to olaparib (18.6%), suggesting they pose a low risk for emesis and may not require routine prophylactic antiemetics.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined contamination levels of antineoplastic agents on floors in a Japanese cancer center to assess healthcare workers' exposure risks outside drug preparation areas.
  • Fluorouracil, a common antineoplastic agent, was detected on all floor surfaces, particularly accumulating around toilet areas where cleaning practices varied.
  • Results indicated that contamination spread through patient excretions and increased in high-traffic areas, highlighting the need for improved cleaning methods and strategies to control contamination in hospitals.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to predict fetal growth restriction (FGR) by examining mRNA levels of the Flt-1 gene in the blood of pregnant women.
  • Researchers compared plasma samples from 11 women with FGR to 88 healthy controls across all three trimesters.
  • Results showed that Flt-1 levels were significantly higher in the FGR group, and the method demonstrated a 60% detection rate at a low false-positive rate, suggesting it could be an effective early warning marker for FGR.

Objective: Maternal cigarette smoking is reportedly associated with miscarriage, fetal growth restriction and placental abruption, and is paradoxically associated with a decreased risk of developing preeclampsia. In the present study, we investigated the gene expression levels of villous tissues in early gestation. We compared the expression levels of the genes related to angiogenesis and apoptosis in the villous tissues obtained from smoking and non-smoking pregnant women.

Objective: First, to determine if microRNA-17 and -19b are expressed in villous samples at early stages of pregnancy. Second, to determine whether placental expressions of these microRNAs along with their main targets (PTEN, CREB-1, TGFβ-1 and TGFβ-RII) are altered in early pregnancy loss.

Study Design: Expression levels of microRNAs and mRNA targets in villous samples from early pregnancy loss (n=11) and matched normal cases (n=20) by gestational age were determined by RT-PCR.

The basic structure of alpha-LiFeO2, lithium iron oxide, is a cubic NaCl-type structure with a lattice constant of 0.42 nm; some short-range ordering characterized by octahedral clusters exists. The local structure of the short-range ordering was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction.
