We examined the expression of laminin-5 and its integrin receptors during reepithelialization of human wounds. We used suction blisters of skin as a model of keratinocyte migration on a basement membrane matrix and mucosal full-thickness wounds as a model in which keratinocytes migrate in a provisional matrix. An animal model, in which human epidermal keratinocytes were injected into the back of athymic mice, was used to follow the deposition of the basement membrane components.

Increased QT interval dispersion is associated with ventricular arrhythmias. The aim of this study was to examine if in postmyocardial infarction patients with impaired left ventricular function, increased QT dispersion is associated with ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF). Measures of QT dispersion, calculated as maximum-minimum (D) and standard deviation (SD) of QTend, QTapex, JTend, JTapex, and Tend intervals in the 12-lead electrocardiogram, were compared in patients who late after myocardial infarction experienced sustained VT (VT group) only, VF (VF group) only, or had no ventricular arrhythmias (controls).

The extracellular matrix proteolytic machinery is known to play a major role in trophoblast invasion, a process that shares similar features with the pathology of tumor invasion. In this study we investigated the expression of the recently described membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MT-MMP-1; MMP-14) in early human placenta and decidual membrane to determine whether it might play a role in invasion. With in situ hybridization, the cytotrophoblasts of trophoblastic columns and the infiltrating intermediate trophoblasts in the decidual membrane were found to be the main producers of MT-MMP-1 mRNA.

An objective method is still lacking in the quantitative assessment of psoriasis severity. The purpose of this study was to examine whether computer image analysis (CIA) by a new colour segmentation method can be used as an objective method of estimating involved surface area in patients with psoriasis. The distribution of the basement membrane anchoring fibril component type VII collagen was studied in oral squamous cell carcinoma by using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical methods. The expression of type VII collagen in oral normal mucosa, lichen planus and epithelial dysplasias was also investigated. Laminin-5 is a glycoprotein which mediates epithelial cell adhesion to the basement membrane. This study describes the distribution and synthesis of laminin-5 in oral lichen planus, epithelial dysplasias, squamous cell carcinomas and a lymph node metastasis using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. In normal oral mucosa and lichen planus, immunoreaction to the laminin-5 was seen as a thin continuous, delicate line in the basement membrane region, although slight irregularities in the thickness and intensity of the immunoreaction could be detected in some cases with lichen planus.

Scleredema is a rare disease, affecting the skin connective tissue with increased amounts of collagen and glycosaminoglycans. In the present study, the collagen synthesis and re-epithelialisation rate were measured from a 64-year-old male patient, who rapidly developed extensive tightening of the skin, without any underlying disease. The skin was thickened at several sites when measured with ultrasound, and the histology revealed accumulation of glycosaminoglycans and collagen bundles.

The regulation of MMPs and their inhibitors is still not known in detail, and the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dexamethasone on cultured oral benign and malignant cell lines. The expression of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) was studied in eight malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH) and in eight dermatofibromas (DF) using in situ hybridization methods (ISH). Immunohistochemical stainings were also performed using corresponding antibodies to TIMP-1 and TIMP-2.
